The stories are intriguing, because it has a lot of action and suspense. It keeps us on our toes. The writers are sure to keep us in the dark and turn us in a certain direction to believe something. Then out of nowhere, they'll pull the rug underneath us when the story was solved. I love me some action, so these shows keep me entertained. I think they are also intriguing, because of all the evidence that is presented. It is amazing what people find and assume. The stories and plots are always complex.
I agree with all of your thoughts. The complex, but logical, conclusions are satisfying and keep the viewer's attention. I particularly like the imagery in this post.
Thank you Luke! You are so sweet. I love complex stories too, because they are never boring. If it weren't for that, a lot of shows and movies would have lost me in their audience. No one likes things they can easily figure out.
People are suspicious of death. It is the ultimate unknown. When mystery surrounds death, there is more that is not known. Humans like conclusion and knowledge. For example, if someone were to walk up to an individual and say "I think you are" and then walk away, that individual would want to know the intended ending of that sentence. These shows and stories allow for conclusion and finality surrounding a topic which is relatively unknown, giving viewers a sense of comfort and order. They also follow a similar structure, always ending in resolution. It is constant and comforting, in an odd way.
The shows are in some way comforting. I have never really thought of them in that way, but you are completely right. I could watch shows like CSI when I was little because I always knew the killer would be caught.
It is a rather abstract thought, but I am glad that you agree with me! Although I did not watch them as a child, I can see how the conclusions would make them more appropriate for a particular age bracket.
The T.V shows like Law & Order are so compelling because I never think that crimes like the ones in the shows will never happen around here. It is interesting to learn about things that have happened in different parts of the world. The shows also keeps me guessing. The shows list the suspects, and I like to try and figure out who committed the crime. So, I have to pay close attention to details just like the detectives do. Each episode is different, and there are always new crimes taking place. Each episode is full of suspense and action.
It is nice to learn about things that have happened, but it would be frightening if something did happen around here. The stories always keep me guessing, too. It's entertaining to try and solve the crime before they reveal the answers.
It would be scary if some of the crimes happened around here. But like you said it is interesting to learn about things that have happened. I'm glad we are learning about things that are not happening anywhere around here.
Crime stories and TV shows are intriguing because they always keep me second guessing everything. It is nice to get away from my own problems and try to solve a different, and much worse, situation. When I’m watching one of these shows, it pulls me in because I have to pay attention to every detail and keep watching to see what happens at the end. It is entertaining to try to guess what will happen as the story unfolds, and it’s interesting to see how detectives can search and find the answers. These stories are also interesting because you know that there is not a happy ending, but there could be justice (which is the next best thing).
I agree with rachel, what makes crime stories so intriguing the the fact that you are always assuming what happens next. Which in most cases are followed by a plot twist and makes you question your exsistance.
Yes, girl! Whenever I watch crime shows, I always feel like a dog trying to catch a laser beam. The clues they throw at the audience make me go all over the place. I think someone is the killer, but then I conclude that it's someone else. It does help me relax too, because the shows take me to a different place. A place away from my personal problems. The work that detectives do amazes me every time. They think of things that would never occur to me. It's funny that you mention the last few sentences, because it made me think of the show, Days of Our Lives. No one ever knows what will happen next. There's always a problem with one of the characters. EJ usually kills someone and then the cops are always trying to catch him, but they never do. Even though I'm a fan of his, I would try to get justice if it were real. Days of our lives will never have a happy ending.
Yeah, when I wrote that, I was thinking about Pretty Little Liars! They are always trying to find Alison's murderer, but the suspects always turn out to be innocent. These kind of shows are interesting because you never know what is going to happen.
That's awesome! Sometimes I wonder if family really does have something to do with murderers. I see patterns in the book, Days of Our Lives, and Pretty Little Liars. I like EJ and Stefani, but they're both pretty much part of the mafia. Stefan's raised him to be the next top dawg, which is probably why he is so corrupted.
I haven't ever thought about the lack of happy endings in these shows. I feel as though since other sources of entertainment always include a happy ending, they become less popular! This also can bring about the theme of humans and their thoughts about their fate. Happiness/heaven seems unbelievable, and sad endings/hell seems more realistic. Hmm....
True crime stories are so intriguing because the veiwer/reader is given a sceniaro where he/she doesn't know what happened and only knows the results. Humans feel that they must know everything, that a secret does not exsist that isn't good enough for them not to know. That's where crime stories come in. Eventually you will be given the answer, but that doesn't stop your mind from infering and making connections as you go. Its an extremely amusing mind-game.
I agree that it strikes the natural curiosity that people possess. It does not seem to matter how bizarre the situation gets; people feel like they need answers.
Bizarre situations? If you are referring to the odd obsessions that are televised about Ancient Aliens and Big Foot then I completely agree. The saying 'ignorance is bliss' seems to have become more of an insult today, causing people to seek myths and nonsense that should just be ignored.
Crime stories are intriguing to the audience because they are so intricate. There are so many fine details that change all the time that it draws in the viewer. It also can strike the fight or flight instinct that we possess. People sit and watch the greusome scenarios and it can make them think about how they would get out of or avoid that situation. Finally one of the largest factors is the intensity of crime stories. There is a lot of action, suspense, emotion involved in a crime story.
You just described everything that I love about these shows! Action and suspense always gets me. It's very hard to catch my attention, without these factors. I like gory stories too! I think about things I would do if I were in those types of situations. My life would be covered. I've never cried over a movie, book, or show; however, some stories have pulled at my heartstrings. It's fascinating the way emotion can play in a situation. It changes people.
I think for most people these stories affect their emotions. It is hard to watch these shows and not think about if someone they know or even themselves would be put in a situation like the one they are watching.
I agree! Not only do these shows cause people to feel unsure, but it causes all the emotions to be felt in such a short period of time! The ability to do so, I feel also causes more people to watch these shows because they are able to feel many things at once instead of feeling happy for about 45 minutes!
I agree, people love intensity, they love that rush of excitement and adrenaline, and shows that can give someone that are very popular.
I think these shows are compelling because they are a mystery that people like to figure out, and they like being able to see and figure out why people do what they do. Most people are addicted to mystery, they love it.
I agree, some people just live for the thrill of mystery. It's like a natural high for them. Not knowing what is going on is the suspense and once they figure it out it's so enlightening.
These television shows are so compelling for numerous reasons. The main reason would be because there have such mystery that keeps everyone guessing. We as humans have an urge to want to know what is always going on. We are nosy if you will. Also suspense of the unknown fascinates us.
We are actively disappointed when watching these shows too and that's also what I think keeps people watching too! The frustration is what lures people in!
Very true! The frustration makes people want more in hopes that the next episode will give them more satisfaction. It's like an addiction.
These TV shows all have one common theme: suspense. No one likes a predictable show, and these shows have been actively successful in making people think that they know what's going to happen, only to prove them wrong.
This is such a good point I hadn't thought of!
As a fan of these kinds of shows, I believe they're so compelling because people want to know not only how people in the police force solve these crimes, but also to get more insight on the mind of a criminal to possible understand their actions.
